Introduction of East China Normal University
East China Normal University (ECNU), China’s first socialist teachers’ university, was founded in October 1951 on the basis of the former Great China University and Kuanghua University, with some faculties integrated from a number of other universities such as Fudan University, Zhejiang University, and Tongji University. Located in Putuo District of Shanghai, the University, known as a “Garden University” for its beautiful campus and its buildings integrating the architectural styles of Europe and China, covers an area of over 55 hectares. On November 2004, the University officially put to use its Minhang campus, which is located in the Purple Bamboo Technology Park (Zizhuyuan Technology Park) in Minhang District of Shanghai and covers an area of 120 hectares. The new campus will be transformed into a digital and ecological campus.

ECNU, a key university under the direct auspices of the Ministry of Education, boasts a strong faculty and advanced instruction facilities. The University consists of 18 full-time schools, namely: School of Humanities, School of Educational Science, School of Educational Administration, School of Preschool Education and Special Education, School of Foreign Languages, School of Business, School of Law and Politics, School of Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language, School of Physical Education and Health Care, School of Science and Engineering, School of Natural Resources and Environmental Science, School of Life Science, School of Information Science and Technology, School of Software Engineering, School of Communication, School of Art, School of Design and the Vocational College. The schools are composed of 39 departments offering 61 undergraduate programs, five of which, i.e. Chinese, History, Mathematics, Geography and Psychology, are on the list of State Training and Research Bases for Liberal Arts and Natural Sciences. In addition, the University boasts six state key programs, one Shanghai first priority discipline, nine Shanghai key programs (covering thirteen sub-disciplines), one state key laboratory, three key laboratories under the Ministry of Education, three Shanghai key laboratories and six key research bases for humanities and social sciences approved by the Ministry of Education. The Training Center for Secondary School Principals at ECNU is the only national base for training principals of key secondary schools at the provincial level and other senior administrators of educational administration.

The Graduate School of the University offers 9 first disciplinary doctoral programs and 88 sub-disciplinary doctoral programs, and 133 Master’s programs. It also has 10 post-doctoral mobile research stations and two administrative colleges: the College of Online Education and the College of Continuing Education. At present, the University boasts a total staff of over 4,500, over 1,600of which are full-time faculty members, among whom are 6 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Chinese Academy of Engineering, and approximately 1,100 professors and associate professors. The full-time undergraduate students amounts to 12,000, postgraduates, 5,900, and international students, 1,300.

In recent years, while maintaining its strength in such traditional academic fields as humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences, the University also adapts itself to social, economic and cultural changes, and strives to develop new disciplines, such as information science and technology, new material technology, life science and genetic technology, ecology, economics, sociology, and management science, forming a new pattern consisting of educational science, social sciences, humanities, natural sciences, and science of technology and management.

In 2001, ECNU celebrated its 50th anniversary. President Jiang Zemin wrote the following inscription for this special occasion: “Based itself upon Shanghai, East China Normal University should strive to meet the needs of the whole country. Great effort should be made for the development of the University so that it will contribute more to the strategy of revitalizing the country through science and education.” Greatly encouraged, the staff and students at ECNU will work harder to transform the University into a comprehensive research university that boasts a number of first-class disciplines with highly coordinated multi-disciplinary development and teacher education that take leads in China.

East China Normal University begun to admit international students from 1960’s and has educated more than 7000 International students who registered for bachelor’s programs, master’s programs, doctoral programs and the Chinese language programs.

The Distance Education Center for Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language (TCFL) of the School of Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language of ECNU, a research center cooperating with the National Office for Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language of China, is one of the World's earliest online institutions specializing in teaching Chinese as a foreign language. At present, more than 5800 students from 137 countries have registered for the online language study programs offered by the Center of the School of Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language of ECNU.
