STUDY in HOLLAND is GETTING MORE POPULAR
05 Sep 2008
The number of Chinese students who wants to study in the Netherlands has increased by 30% compared with last year. It exceeds the growth of any other European study destinations.
This has been established by Neso China. The amount of applicants for studying in Holland for the period 2008-2009 rose by the end of August to around 2500. This means an increase around 30% compared to the previous academic year. According to the experience, over 80% will leave for Holland in the coming period. It marks that students from China have become the second largest group of foreign students in the Netherlands after the students from Germany. Business, Engineering, Art and Humanities are the most popular programmes for Chinese students. Law, Architecture and Agriculture are also enlisted in the top selected majors.
According to Mr. Jacques van Vliet, director of Neso China, the following reasons play a role:
- High quality of higher education
Dutch higher education enjoys a good fame for its excellence in teaching and researches. 11 Dutch universities rank among the world top 200 on the Times HES 2007 Ranking
- Around 1400 English taught programmes for Chinese students to choose from, which makes the Netherlands the leader in English courses of non- English speaking countries. Chinese students need not to learn Dutch to study and live well in the Netherlands, since also practically all Dutch people speaks English.
- The cost of studying and living in Holland is quite moderate and competitive comparing with other main study destinations. If taking the quality education into consideration; studying in Holland is highly cost effective.
- The Netherlands is an open, multicultural society with a big Chinese community. From past experience, Chinese students easily adapt in this society.
- The Chinese graduates will have one year to find a job, and once they have found it, they are feasible to get a work permit for 5 years. So not only the foreign diploma is important, more and more also the foreign work experience; and the Netherlands offers such a possibility. Since the application of the policy from the end of 2007, positive feedback came from the Netherlands, “The Chinese students are often the top of the bill and excellent candidates for vacancies in the Dutch labor market”.
- Neso China is now 7 years active in China, through the continuous efforts, more and more people learn to know the benefits of Dutch higher education. Neso rencently launched the Go West Campaign to improve the Sino-Dutch education exchanges in the western areas of China.
The latest good message for Chinese students is that since September 1, 2008, TOEFL iBT will be formally accepted in the application, it means students will have more options to study abroad with less effort in language test preparation. Neso China will reach out to an even larger audience, and a further increase is to be expected.
