TU Delft voted best host university for international students

23 Apr 2009

TU Delft is the best Dutch research university when it comes to welcoming international students. TU Delft came second at the Oranje Loper Award ceremony, after the Institute of Social Studies in The Hague.

The Oranje Loper Award, which is a prize for the best social reception for international students, was awarded last week for the first time. This took place at the Nuffic Annual Congress in the Doelen conference centre in Rotterdam. An independent jury chose three institutions from 21 entrants: the Institute of Social Studies (ISS) in The Hague, TU Delft and Tilburg University. In the end, TU Delft was awarded second place after the ISS by the public, making it the highest scoring Dutch university.

Worldwide
TU Delft’s high score in the Oranje Loper Award confirms the excellent reputation which the university has built in this respect. According to a recent I-Graduate benchmarking study of 192 institutions worldwide, TU Delft’s students rated it highest in this field within Europe and TU Delft scored a respectable second place worldwide in 2008.

Introduction Week

The introduction week, which is an intensive ten-day programme, is crucial for TU Delft’s approach to new international students. It is based on three elements: Meet & Greet, Introduction and Registration. The aim of the Meet & Greet is to welcome students and set them up safely in their new home; the Introduction Programme is aimed at preparing the students for their study at TU Delft and the social life in Delft. Registration guides students through the administrative procedures for accommodation and registration in a transparent way.

IKEA shopping

TU Delft’s reception service for international students begins at Schiphol airport. TU Delft staff and students spend four days welcoming students at Schiphol, from six o’clock in the morning until twelve o’clock at night. Other aspects have also been taken into consideration. During the introduction week, students can register for activities such as Ikea-shopping, an introduction to the public transport system in the Netherlands, visiting supermarkets and a dance workshop.

New Architecture Summer School programme

This summer, the Faculty of Architecture will host a new Summer School programme, which is still open for registration. The programme, ‘Design Studio about the Transformation of Buildings and Environments’ will be held from 3 August 2009 to 14 August 2009 in conjunction with Utrecht University and the Utrecht Summer School and is still open for registration. During the Design Studio about the Transformation of Buildings and Environments, participating students will focus on the old city post office on Neude Square in Utrecht. Due to post office closures by Dutch postal company TNT Post, the building may soon come to be abandoned. Students will come up with designs for transforming the context of the building, which is a striking example of the Amsterdam School originally designed by architect Joseph Crouwel, Jr.

TU Delft’s Learning centre under development

Within a three-year period, the TU Delft campus will be enriched by a Learning Centre and a completely transformed TU Delft Library. Both buildings will serve as a base for students, PhD students and graduates, professors and researchers from across TU Delft. Four new project spaces were recently opened in the library. The themes of the spaces are Asia, Australia, South America and Europe. The spaces are in demand: from early in the morning until late at night, they have already become one of the favourite places for project work.
