2008 Highly Skilled Migrants Monitor: Annual increase in the number of highly skilled migrants continues
31 Aug 2009
Well over 13,000 highly skilled migrants have come to the Netherlands since the introduction of the Highly Skilled Migrants Scheme in 2004. In recent years, each year saw an increase in the number of applications of highly skilled migrants. Participating companies are satisfied with the scheme and are of the opinion that it contributes to the strengthening of the economy. This is evident from the "2008 Highly Skilled Migrants Monitor", which was published on 17 March by Peter Veld, General Director of the Immigration and Naturalisation Service.
The Highly Skilled Migrants Monitor provides insight into the development, implementation and effects of the Highly Skilled Migrants Scheme and gives a profile of the background of these migrants. The Monitor shows that approximately half of them are aged between 18 and 30 and approximately one third between 30 and 40. Nearly 80% of highly skilled migrants have completed a university education. Seventy-five percent of the highly skilled migrants who came to the Netherlands in recent years are male. They are mostly employed in the ICT and the business services sector, followed by industry and trade. Most highly skilled migrants come from India, the United States and China.
