07 Jan 2009
VU University Amsterdam is the fastest rise among the Dutch universities in the latest ranking published by the Jiao Tong University in Shanghai. Together with the University of Amsterdam and Groningen University, VU University Amsterdam is now ranked in group 101-150.
According to the leading Shanghai Ranking, Utrecht University is still the Netherlands’ top university, although it has dropped from position 42 to 47 in the world ranking. The second-best Dutch university is Leiden, even though this university also dropped 5 positions to number 76.
The Shanghai Academic Ranking of World Universities has been set up to fill the qualitative “gap” between the Chinese universities and other worldwide leading universities. About 2,000 universities have been scanned for its number of Nobel Prize winners, important publications and the number of quotes in the media by famous researchers. There have not been any shifts in the top ten. Harvard is still ranked the best university, followed by Stanford and Berkeley.
