Dutch Design, Shanghai International Creative Industry Week 15-21 Oct 2009

14 Oct 2009

This characterisation applies equally to Dutch architects, graphic designers, product designers and fashion designers. They are qualities that originate from the Dutch national character, shaped by centuries of necessary collaboration and technological innovation in creating and sustaining new land where once there was water. Indeed, after God created the world, the Dutch created the Netherlands, half of which is man-made.

But these qualities can also be traced to the strong modernist tradition in Dutch design and its rational, social and aesthetic principles. The cornerstone of this tradition is a strong belief in the possibility of shaping the world we live in by design and in this way improving the quality, usefulness and sustainability of our environment and the objects we use in daily life.

About Dutch Design Fashion Architecture

The Dutch Design Fashion and Architecture (DutchDFA) programme aims to strengthen and consolidate the international position of the most prominent sectors of the Dutch creative industries – design, fashion and architecture – through a joined-up approach.

The DutchDFA programme is a four-year strategic programme in a selection of focus countries that relates to topical issues and local demands. The aim is to build long-lasting international partnerships while addressing issues facing today’s world through design.
