IHS works at the forefront of urban development. IHS advises local and national governments on urban issues, trains public works officials, contributes to the global Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) discussion and much more.

IHS works with global leaders in the field of urban development, including: UN-Habitat, Cities Alliance and ICLEI. IHS also delivers education programmes in the field of urban development to develop the next generation of urban managers.

Cities are in a constant state of unprecedented change. Global population movements create multi-level physical, economic, environmental and social challenges. To remain sustainable, livable and competitive cities need urban managers who are well-trained in policy development and good governance.

The MSc in Urban Management and Development is a 12-month English-taught multidisciplinary programme offered in six specialisation tracks:

Urban Economic Development and Resilience

Innovative and Entrepreneurial Cities in a Global Economy

Urban Housing, Equity and Social Justice

Adequate Housing from a Human Rights and Gender Perspective

Urban Environment, Sustainability and Climate Change

Nature-Based Solutions for Smart and Resilient Cities

Strategic Urban Planning and Policy

Managing Socio-Spatial Dynamics for Sustainable Cities

Urban Land Governance for Sustainable Development

Bridging Land, Water and Natural Resources

Infrastructure and Green Cities

Managing Sustainable Water, Transport, Energy, Waste and Drainage Services

The MSc is designed to equip students with the skills to solve contemporary urban issues in their countries through progressive policy-making. A key feature of the programme is the use of comparative methodologies to discuss urban issues, policies and trends from around the world.

The IHS classroom is comprised of mid-level professionals with rich and varied experiences from more than 45 countries. Typical backgrounds include architecture, engineering, planning, economics, social science, environmental science and housing. Although they come from many different backgrounds, all IHS students are looking to become accomplished urban managers, able to lead teams and drive change in cities.

IHS contributes to the OTS scholarship scheme each year to provide financial assistance to urban professionals looking to develop their career in the field of urban development.
